I've had my sight set on this book for a while and finally I got around to it.Though it took me a while to get into the writing style and into the character's head, "Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson drew me in and kept me turning pages until long past my bedtime.It's the story of Melinda. A freshman girl whose life changes at a party - irrevocably.At school, she's shunned for calling the cops. She becomes the school outcast - without friends, not even friendly faces. Speaking would only cause more trouble. So she bottles everything up. But on the inside, she's screaming and raging, her spirit slowly dying while she hides the truth of what really happened at the party. The truth of why her whole life has changed.Unable to talk to anyone, she withdraws more and more and the readers gets to be part of the process, the loneliness she's feeling.Similar to a journal, she shares her thoughts and feelings. What I found at first to be strange was her sharing trivial information about her days at school or home and the people she encountered. But there is so much she says between the lines and so much she doesn't say that gives her words new meaning.At times, it's one simple sentence that demonstrates the gravity of her pain and despair. And it's that subtlety that really packs a punch and knocked me on my butt at times. Dieses Buch hat mich sehr berührt. Es ist erstaunlich, wie authentisch der Charakter von Melinda dargestellt wird.Man fühlt sofort mit ihr mit, und obwohl es in diesem Buch ja eigentlich um eine Vergewaltigung geht, wird diese nicht permanent in den Vordergrund gestellt, vielmehr Melindas Gefühlsleben, ihre Wege mit ihrer schwierigen Situation irgendwie fertig zu werden. Gerade das macht das Buch so echt, der Leser taucht völlig in Melindas Welt ein.An vielen Stellen war das Buch auch wirklich sehr lustig, gerade wenn Melina mit ihrem schwarzen, doch stark depressiv angehauchten Humor Situationen um sich herum aus ihrer Sicht betrachtet.Was mich besonders berührt hat, war die Unfähigkeit Melindas am Anfang des Buches sich irgendwie mitzuteilen, im Laufe des Buches jedoch ändert sich das.
Ich fand das Buch sehr gut :)Am Anfang weiß man nicht, warum Melinda nichts mehr zu sagen hat, aber nach und nach kommt man dahinter.Zum einen kommt sie gegen die Redeschwälle der anderen nicht an und dieser am Anfang noch uminöse Vorfall auf der Party im Sommer bekommt immer mehr an Gewicht, so lange bis die genauen Umstände aufgeklärt werden und Melinda für sich selber merkt, dass sie sich nur retten kann, wenn sie redet...Und das tut sie am Ende auch...Ich finde, dass das Buch sehr gut geschrieben ist.Man kann alles sehr gut nachvollziehen und versteht, was hinter dem Schweigen steht. Warum Mel einfach die Worte ausgehen.Bei manchen Szenen musste ich echt schlucken...die Ignoranz um sie herum ist wirklich ergreifend.
Obwohl dieses Buch ein ernstes Thema behandelt, wird die Geschichte auf eine teilweise sogar humorvolle Art und Weise erzählt. Man begleitet die Hauptfigur durch eine schwierige Phase ihres Lebens und dennoch ist es nie bedrückend. Es regt zum Nachdenken an und ist bestimmt nicht nur für Jugendliche interessant zu lesen. Ich würde dieses Buch auf jeden Fall weiterempfehlen.

Gute Schullektüre, schülernahes Thema/Situation (Ausgrenzung einer einzelnen Person), angemessener Gebrauch von "slang", Jugendsprache, gut verständlich, ansonsten 'gutes' Englisch, das als Vorbild dienen kann.
Haben dieses Buch in der Schule gelesen und obwohl einige meiner Mitschüler den Anschein haben, dass sich deren Englischerfahrung lediglich auf Hashtags beschränkt, scheinen sie mitgekommen zu sein.Ich persönlich halte das Buch in Ordnung, es gibt einem einen Einblick in die Verhaltensänderung einer Vergewaltigten und das tut es recht gut. Jedoch hat es sich an manchen Stellen etwas gezogen, deswegen einen Stern Abzug.
I have just finished this book and I have to say that I am not as impressed as I though I was going to be. I like YAL that covers difficult topics such as rape etc. Knowing from the backcover that this was the main topic of this book, there was not much left to find out. Do not get me wrong, I think it was fantastic to show how Melinda is affected, how she tries to forget the incident yet everything reminds her of it. And I also liked the art teacher's role a lot. I just thought it was a bit boring throughout the book because we were just following a traumatised girl around. I haven't yet made up my mind whether I like or dislike this book.
