Juan Martin Guevara lives in Buenos Aires. He spent more than 8 years behind bars under the military junta for his political activities and connection with Che. He went on to found 'Por las huellas del Che', an association dedicated to the legacy of his older brother. Armelle Vincent is a French journalist based in Los Angeles. She came into contact with Juan Martin, who was at the time the biggest importer of Cuban cigars into Argentina, while writing an article for a French magazine, L'Amateur de Cigare.

A fascinating account of the family roots that contributed to the emergence of one of the most iconic figures of the 20th century, as well as a personal intimate story of Che's brother who also fought against injustice in Argentina. Extremely informative, passionate and a pleasure to read.

Really enjoyed reading this book. I always like "Che" Guevara from when I was younger. This book took nothing away from the actual "greatness" of the man he really was.

Memoirs are sometimes tough to read because you have to wade through a lot of face-saving tales.CHE, MY BROTHER is part biography of Che by his much younger brother Juan Martin as well as an autobiography of Juan Martin and the rest of Ernesto's family.The issue here is that Juan Martin repeatedly says that he really didn't know Che after he left home. He and his parents would only receive rare correspondence. And, the correspondence would come from anonymous destinations.And there's, of course, we're taking with Juan Martin to Bolivia to the area where Che was assassinated. He was, as most of us are, upset by the commercialization of Che's image. He doesn't learn much. How much could he learn so many decades-- 5 or so?-- after the events?Nothing revealing here. Except for his relationship with Che when they were younger, Juan Martin (and family) was as much in the dark about Ernesto as anyone who read about him in the daily paper.There's still a lot of mystery to Che. This book doesn't shed a lot of light

Library book. No purchase. Good book. Written by younger brother, w help from French author. Juan Martin is/was 15 years younger than Che. Lots of background info on the Guevara familia. Juan Martin wanted to explain Che's persona re:his family background and upbringing. Interesting. Family was, by JM's own account, somewhat dysfunctional. Also the influence on Che of having grown up Argentine. Author pulls no punches when describing his family and their eccentricities. Can almost be harsh. Che's influence on Cuba and the revolution is certainly highlighted. According to JM Che continues to be a source of inspiration to modern day Cubans. Interesting insights into what it means/meant to be related to Che and the expectations of others as a result. Interesting insights into modern day problems in Latin America. Also good background info on what it was like in Argentina in the late 70s to be associated with certain elements of the "Peronistas". I was not aware that there were @ least two camps or groups of Peronistas. A right and left wing. Juan Person himself, according to JM, encouraged violence and harsh retribution against Montoneros, or young, socialist, student/intellectual wing. Author also tells of the trials and tribulations of these people, followers of Che's ideology, under successive military dictatorships. If you love Mnuchin and his wife or the Trumps, stay far away from this book. You will hate it. If you, however, are curious as to Che Guevara, the man and the legend, give it some time. You won't be disappointed. Authors are good. Food for thought. Miami Cuban exile? Not for you.

This book, written by the youngest brother of Ernesto Che Guevara, Juan MartÃn, in collaboration with the French journalist Armelle Vincent, recounts in a deeply emotional way episodes of the life of Ernesto that Juan MartÃn shared with him in his native Argentina. The narrative can be divided into four parts, which are very well intertwined, and include the family life of Ernesto from his birth in 1928 until his departure from Argentina in 1953; the political persecution to which his family was subjected and the imprisonment of Juan MartÃn by military governments of the extreme right in his native country; the defense of the triumph and achievements of the Cuban revolution by the author; and the meaning of Ernesto's political thinking for future generations. The extraordinary and imposing personality of the mother, Celia de la Serna y Llosa, stands out as the most influential person in the formation of the Guevara children: Ernesto, Celia, Roberto, Ana MarÃa and Juan MartÃn. She and Ernesto develop a unique affective bond that leads them to suffer intensely the absence of each other, sometimes with devastating consequences for the mother, who experiences long lasting depressive episodes. The father, Ernesto Guevara Lynch, is characterized as an individual without defined objectives, an adventurer, an opportunist. Juan MartÃn affirms that he is a tanguero, meaning a man who enjoys the easy live in the neighborhoods of Buenos Aires. Ernesto, during his life, maintains his family contacts intact, without breaking them, through an extensive correspondence, which Juan MartÃn uses to describe important aspects of Che's personality as his love for all of them, the interest for the welfare and the progress of his siblings, and thr joy of sharing with them the experiences of his success in the Cuban revolution. Juan MartÃn illustrates very well the their family life with the excellent photographs included. The dark side in the life of the members of the family appears after the triumph of the Cuban revolution and the implantation of repressive, usually military, governments in Argentina. All members of the Guevara clan endure the effects of persecution, are exiled, and some of them die far way from their homeland. Juan MartÃn remains in Argentina where he is imprisoned for eight long years . After his release, he decides to become the standard-bearer to preserve the political thought of his brother.The author's experience as a political leader along with his visits and contacts in Cuba help him to analyze and express his opinion about the future of this country, and the not too distant possibility for Cuba to re-enter the capitalist world. To avoid the worst, he believes, man must transform himself into a new one, following the steps of his brother, who was a profoundly intellectual individual and became one of the most important world leaders of the twentieth century.This book, for its historical value, should be read carefully. Some of its chapters, like the first, are moving in the description of the author's personal experience while visiting the places in Bolivia where his brother Ernesto spent the last days of his life.Note: I wrote this review after my reading of the Spanish version of this book.
